Better Together officially launched on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, and our launch week was greeted by many supporters, including podcasters!
On January 26, 2023, Better Together’s founder and CEO, Catharine Montgomery, was interviewed by Communications Strategist, Chava Vietze, on her new educational podcast, Stop Blaming Avocados. Catharine opens up about the journey of turning Better Together into a full-service communications agency from just an idea on a Google Doc and a chance encounter on Slack (you have to listen to the episode to believe it).
So, how did Better Together come to fruition? What was the motivation behind creating a mission-driven public relations and communications agency?
Catharine explained on the podcast episode that back in 2019 she began jotting down names and ideas of what her ideal public relations agency would look like and created her LLC., which would ultimately be her “baby.” She wanted to create an agency that support mission-driven organizations that didn’t have the same resources as more prominent, well-known companies.
Then, when the unfortunate murder of George Floyd occurred and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, Catharine noticed an onslaught of organizations making promises to support the movement, support marginalized communities and donate…but a few years later, what to show for it? Where is the accountability? Where was the $49.5 billion donated?
Unfortunately, since Catharine always had a full-time job, her LLC never picked up. That was until she decided to respond to a Slack message from a recruiter who announced that a venture capital firm was interested in expanding its investment in public relations agencies (which doesn’t happen often, if at all) to the U.S.
It was a risk that Catharine was willing to take and she listened to her gut, while ignoring all the naysayers. The investors were sold on her idea due to her passion, the uniqueness of the agency and the importance of social change. With that, Better Together was well on its way to greatness with legit financial backing from MXP Ventures.
We encourage you to listen to the rest of the interview with Catharine and Chava, and listen to how Catharine believes that 2023 will be the year that brands and organizations are going to be held accountable by consumers, especially Millennials and Gen Z. Also, Catharine makes it a point to inform Chava that this whole process was not easy…but she’s proud of herself for not giving up.
Listen to the Stop Blaming Avocados podcast episode to continue to learn more about Catharine’s journey, her dream client for Better Together and hear what she likes to do as self-care (for all of you who live in DC, you’re going to love this one).
Continue to follow Better Together, as this is just the beginning of our journey!
